In the interest of promoting that fourth trait only slightly less critical than égalité, fraternité, and liberté—légèreté—here is a photo of Eddie Murphy on a Paris rooftop in the mid-80s, eating steak frites off the back of a naked model.
The rooftop—which has views of the towers of the Églises Saint-Suplice and des Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the hills of Montmartre and the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur—is likely on the rue Notre Dame des Champs near rue Vavin in the 6th arrondissement. Unlike previous great Americans in Paris like Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, no plaque was ever installed to commemorate Eddie Murphy’s visit or this momentous event in particular.
