How to Break Up with Someone in French

A person holding a sign

Valentine’s Day has just come and gone. And we all know what that means…

Time to break up with that annoying boyfriend or girlfriend you stuck around for because you didn’t want to be alone on the Hallmark holiday that provides enough single-shaming to keep eHarmony afloat for the next twelve months. The only thing is, getting out those words is hard. Everyone knows there’s no good way to say it. “We’re done. Finito. End of the program.”

So gunnarolla has come up with an alternative approach: just say it in French. Maybe it’s your way of subtly working in your sophistication to remind him that you’re way out of his league. Maybe the last look you want to see on her face is one of total frustrated confusion. Maybe it’s just a cop-out.

Anyway, here are a number of ways to break up with someone in French, from the ones even your dad knows are overused to the truly original. Use them wisely.
