Who is Nekfeu?

This year’s MTV European Music Awards, which will be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands are coming up on November 6th and the outspoken French rapper, Nekfeu, is up for the award for Best French Act.

Nekfeu has been a well known name in the French rap scene for a while. Since starting out doing open mic battles in Paris with the group S-Crew and then later with the group 1995, Nekfeu’s lyrics have been around since the early 2000’s, but it wasn’t until 2015 that he released his own studio album, titled Feu.

Like most French rappers, Nekfeu gained notoriety for having some political lyrics, and after he won the award for urban album of the year at the Victoires de la Musique this February, Nekfeu made things even more political and attacked France’s far right by adding the line, “Take Marine Le Pen and Free Moussa” to his song “On Verra.”

Besides the occasional political jab, Nekfeu’s album has a theme not often taken on by rappers: love. It’s genuine, and not just about romantic love, but also about family and friendship.
