The Great Haute Couture Challenge

A girl with a pink umbrella

Ever wondered what happens to those beautiful runway gowns after Paris fashion week is over? You know, the ones with five tons of tulle and feathered headdresses poking through the ceiling?

In this video, Harper’s BAZAAR goes to Paris with model Solange Smith to test the ultimate fashion experiment: can you wear haute couture in real life? Modeling an exquisite pink high-low ballgown by Giambattista Valli from Fall/Winter 2017 Haute Couture, Smith shows us a day in the life of a walking art piece. Whether pouting over her coffee (don’t you just hate when people step on your parade float of an outfit?) or going grocery shopping (doesn’t that shopping cart perfectly accentuate the delicate miniskirt in the front?), Smith looks less like a girl on a day about town and more like a prize peacock being shuffled about on an exhibition tour.

But all in all, an impressive feat. Although I will say, Carrie Bradshaw did it first, also in Paris, in this Versace mille feuille dress. Who wore it better? I’ll let you be the judge of that. Regardless, she looks breathtaking against the backdrop of Paris.
