Chilla: France’s Newest “Rappeuse” Making Waves

At just 22 years old, French singer and rapper Chilla has gained a large following for her enchanting musical style.

Originally from Lyon, Chilla picked up her rapping style from the streets as well as gaining musical knowledge from playing the violin for 12 years. Now she mixes singing and rapping with funky beats to create a totally unique and personal style.

At first, Chilla was making covers of the artists she loves, altering her favorite songs to become something entirely new. After performing a few times on the French television show “Talent Street,” Chilla gained fans and has begun to work an on EP. She has a beautiful singing voice, but also a sincerity and sense of style that speaks to people.

On top of that, Chilla uses her new public platform for activism. Recently she posted the hashtag #justicepourtheo on her Facebook, a reference to the movement against police brutality in France after the sexual assault of a 22-year-old black man called Theo in the Parisian suburb of Aulnay-Sous-Bois by a French policeman.
