For the fourth year in a row, the Bilingual Fair will assemble all the main actors in bilingual education in the New York area for one big, informative day. Powered by French Morning, the 2017 fair will take place on November 4th in a new location, Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus on the Upper West Side. Get your tickets now!

Schools, after school programs, extracurricular activities, booksellers, and publishers, all dedicated to bilingual education, will be present on the day of the fair. These exhibitors are all working toward one objective: to help parents navigate the growing number of bilingual education offers. (See the growing list of exhibitors here.) A dozen languages will be represented. On the French side, all the schools with bilingual French opportunities in the New York area will be there, both in the public and private sectors. This is the time to get your questions answered, before even setting foot in one of the city’s hundreds of school open house nights.

The big change in this year’s fair is the addition of an essay contest on bilingualism, open to middle and high school students who are bilingual in any two or more languages. The competition is open to all bilingual students, whether or not they are enrolled in a bilingual program, in all kinds of schools (private, public, charter, magnet). Essays must be submitted in English and should answer the question, “How does being bilingual make you different, shape you, or define who you are?” The awards ceremony will take place during the bilingual fair. Winners will receive a check for themselves (up to $800 in the high school category) as well as for their school. (See more information and submit an essay before October 22 here.)

Throughout the day, talks and panels will be held to help parents better understand bilingual education. Deputy chancellor of NYC’s Department of Education, Milady Baez, will be the day’s keynote speaker, opening the fair with remarks at 10am. Other conferences include: Bilingual Education: is there a “right model”, by Dr Christine Helot; The Bilingual Revolution, an interview with Fabrice Jaumont; A Bilingual Life, a panel moderated by Sean Lynch, headmaster of the Lycée Français; L’ École des loisirs; The Challenges of Bilingual Education, by Anne-Sophie Gueguen, head of school at the French American Academy; Business and Bilingualism, with Dr Kathleen Stein-Smith.

The Bilingual Fair is supported by the Lycée Français de New York, as well as l’Ecole Internationale de New York, the French American School of New York, Lyceum Kennedy, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Délégation Générale du Québec, and the French Department of Fordham University.
