Every year, the embassy, the Alliance Française, and a few restaurants are decked out in the colors of the French flag to celebrate Bastille Day in the federal capital. And in 2026, the festivities will take on a historic significance, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Franco-American friendship.

The Comité Tricolore’s big event will take place on Friday, July 10, from 7 pm to 11 pm at the Maison Française (4101 Reservoir Road NW). This anniversary gala celebrates 250 years of friendship between the two nations with cuisine prepared by DC’s top chefs, fine wines, and live music by the Hot Club of Baltimore, followed by DJ sets. The Alliance Française Washington DC, is celebrating July 14 with an evening themed around a French village. For the occasion, the center will be transformed into a village market featuring French-speaking artisans and vendors, tastings of Bayonne ham, other charcuterie, and cheeses, pastries from Cloudette, and treats inspired by French cuisine—all followed by a champagne toast and a rendition of “La Marseillaise.” The evening will conclude with a karaoke session. Off the Mall Tours offers a guided tour exploring the French influence on Washington through a 1.5-hour walk around Lafayette Square and the surrounding neighborhood. The tour highlights the Marquis de Lafayette, a hero of the American Revolution; the city’s architecture, which was heavily influenced by France; African Americans from Washington who sought exile in France to escape segregation in the early 20th century; and the life of Pierre L’Enfant, the capital’s first urban planner. The tour departs from the southeast corner of Lafayette Square (by the Lafayette statue). The cost is $30 per adult and $20 for children under 18.

The DC Road Runners Club continues its annual tradition with a 5k race on the evening of July 14 along the C&O Canal towpath at Fletcher’s Cove. In Great Falls, Virginia, the restaurant L’Auberge Chez François is hosting its annual Bastille Day celebration for the 13th consecutive year on Sunday, July 12, at 4 pm, on its covered terrace overlooking the restaurant’s gardens. The festivities kick off with the traditional waiters’ and waitresses’ race around the gardens—inspired by the famous Parisian race—with trays and bottles of champagne in hand, competing for the Bastille Day trophy. Following that, for $250 per person, a six-course tasting dinner will be prepared by Chef Jacques Haeringer, paired with French wines and live music. Just a stone’s throw from the Capitol, Bistro Cacao is offering a special three-course menu for $75 per person on Tuesday, July 14, accompanied by live music on the terrace.
