Where to Horseback Ride Near Paris

police on horseback in paris

Horseback riding may not be the best way to get around in Paris—though the police montée might disagree. But once upon a time, Paris was a city on horseback, until riders were gradually pushed out to the Île-de-France, where forests, spacious stables, and even castles still provide the perfect backdrop for equestrian pursuits today.

The French aristocracy had a deep love for equestrian sports, and that legacy lives on. You can still find riding schools and scenic trails in the same historic châteaux, like Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Chantilly. Some schools are reserved for professional horseback training and horse boarding, while others offer leisurely trail rides and lessons for beginners.
