Fans at the Euro 2016 football tournament in France have been reaching new levels of violence as they take to the streets in riots after the games.

Maybe it’s the addition of new countries who have been allowed to play in the competition this year, like Northern Ireland and Wales, or maybe it’s the current state of Europe amidst the chaotic refugee crisis that is getting fans all riled up. Either way, the fans’ “hooliganism” has been beyond anything seen before” according to Mark Roberts the Assistant Chief Constable of the British police.

French police have had to don riot gear to break up some of the clashes between fans, even using tear gas in some instances.

The wild fan riots have even reached the ears of the American media, and The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah poked fun at the football fan’s violence on his show, particularly the fights between the Russian and British fans.

“The violence between these Russian and British fans has been insane, which I think really shows the difference between American and European football,” said Noah. “You see in Europe, it’s the fans that get the concussions.”
