A little birdie has announced the new filming locations for everyone’s favorite-least-favorite Netflix rom-com, Emily in Paris. Season 6 is set to begin production in May, with Greece and Monaco as backdrops. (Meaning we’ll likely get another December release date.) Having already filmed in Paris, Saint Tropez, Giverny, and Megève in France, as well as Rome, Venice, and Ostia Antica (the real life location for the fictional town of Solitano) in Italy, the show seems to be spreading across Europe faster than a new strain of COVID.

The Greece location implies a reunion of sorts between Emily and Le Chef Hot Gabriel (now a private chef on a yacht docked for the summer in the Mediterranean), whose postcard invitation at the end of Season 5 seems to have been answered.

The ultrawealthy principality of Monaco also offers plenty of professional opportunities for Emily and Agence Grateau—we’ll certainly get at least one casino scene, and maybe a luxury fashion shopping spree along the Carré d’Or.

And yet—we’ve got many months to go before we can zone out and watch Emily weasel her way into the marketing world’s upper echelons on pure delusion and unearned confidence alone. So I thought I would put together some recommendations for similar shows and movies that might tide viewers over until then.

The closest comp, in my opinion, would be Too Much, another Netflix rom-com about an obnoxious yet lovable American girl moving abroad and finding herself forced to adjust to her new surroundings. Created by Lena Dunham and starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe, it’s a London love story undergirded by a brutal skewering of the British upper class.

While we’re on the London side of things, why not a Ted Lasso rewatch? An overconfident, criminally underqualified American abroad who always manages to come out on top… sound familiar?

For the New York girlies, I obviously have to mention Sex and the City (from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star) and Gossip Girl (which is directly referenced in Emily in Paris as a major part of Emily’s fashion girl lore). Both have episodes set in Paris, which you could skip ahead to if a full rewatch isn’t in the cards.

Nostalgia also dictates that I pay my respects to The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which gets a shout-out from Emily on her visit to the Trevi Fountain with Marcello.

For a French language show, I’d recommend The Hookup Plan (Plan Cœur), which is about a lovelorn parisienne who unknowingly falls for the escort her friends hire to help her get over her ex. There’s also Étoile, the bilingual Amazon Prime show from Amy Sherman-Palladino, in which ballet companies in New York and Paris swap performers for a season.

My advice, though, would be to skip TV altogether and opt for an Audrey Hepburn marathon of Sabrina, Funny Face, Charade, and Roman Holiday. All are heavily referenced in Emily in Paris (particularly the latter), and maintain a whimsical, aspirational feel, with charming backdrops (soundstage or not), fabulous fashion moments, and Hepburn’s perennial charm. And soon enough, we’ll be seeing Lily Collins as Hepburn herself in a new movie about the filming of Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Are there any I missed? Let me know.

Ciao,
Catherine Rickman, Editor-in-Chief
