How The Classic Chanel Handbag Gets Made

As one of the most famous French fashion designers of all time, Coco Chanel was, as would be fitting, known for quite a few trademark fashion pieces. She changed the way upper-class women dressed in from the 1920s to 1950s by producing and popularizing clothing that was both stylish and practical.

The LBD is one example of this, a step down from the elaborate and constraining dresses women had worn in previous decades. Chanel also aided the movement that inspired women to begin wearing pants and shirts like the marinière. But one of her other big contributions to practical style was the Classic Flap Bag and the 2.55 Flap Bag, one of the first designer handbags to have a shoulder strap. Previously, all women’s purses had been hand-held, restricting movement and limiting what women could carry with them.

This bag has become one of the most iconic items to come out of the famed French fashion house, and is a permanent symbol of class and style. Watch this incredible video in Chanel’s “Making of” series to see how these bags are lovingly and individually handcrafted into unique and irreplicable statement pieces.
