A Look at Rafael Nadal’s French Open Dynasty

A double photo of a person

“All the things that I went through… probably give me that extra passion when I am playing, because I know I will not be here forever.”

In this video, Guardian Sport takes a quick look back at the tennis successes of Spanish athlete Rafael Nadal, who went up against Austrian player Dominic Thiem this weekend to win the 2019 Roland Garros tennis championship. This is Nadal’s 12th French Open win, meaning the tennis player has just surpassed Australian Open 11-time champ Margaret Court to win the record of the most titles won by any person at a single tournament. At 18 total Grand Slams, he’s still two away from Roger Federer’s all-time 20, but considering that the Swiss athlete has four years on Nadal, it is more than possible that the 33-year-old champion could catch up.

With the French Open over, Nadal will be looking to Wimbledon in July. But can he keep up this incredible streak? You’ll have to watch to find out.
