Discover the historic Notre-Dame and Saint-Louis districts in the royal city: cobbled streets, elegant facades and architecture.
📍 Notre-Dame is the oldest area in Versailles. It was built by Louis XIV to embellish the area surrounding the Palace. King Louis XIV built this once greenfield to embellish the area north of the Palace. Inhabitants started to settle from 1671, building according to specific rules along the streets; surprisingly large and straight for the time.
The area is still organised around the original institutions. You can visit the Notre-Dame church that was once the King’s parish, or stroll around the old bailiwick which was housing the local courthouse under the Ancien Régime and is now at the heart of the charming Antiquarian District.
You’ll be irresistibly drawn to the Notre-Dame Market Square, especially lively on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, when the best market in the region is in full swing!
A few blocks away, housed in a charming 18th century hôtel particulier, you will discover the Lambinet museum. In a special 18th century atmosphere, you will find collections about the city’s history and the French Revolution…
📍 The Saint Louis area is located to the south, divided in two historics parts: the Old Versailles and Saint Louis Area strictly speaking. The Old Versailles was the former medieval village earned by Louis XIII, and it is now the historical centre of the city.
Explore the surrounding areas: you will discover some beautiful and well-preserved monuments like the Convent of the Récollets, the Former Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Marine built under Louis XV… One of the most important site of this area is the Royal Tennis Court, where the French Revolution started.
You can also admire the Saint-Louis cathedral (1743-1754), a superb building with a beautiful collection of period paintings, and the King’s Vegetable Garden, created to feed the Palace’s large population. Head for the “Carrés Saint-Louis”, a collection of buildings constructed under Louis XV as accommodation for a new market.
