After months of uncertainty, France has elected Emmanuel Macron, the centrist candidate who ran on his own party, called En Marche!, as president. He won 65.82% of the vote, while his opponent, far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen won other 34.18%.
Now, France will be closely paying attention to Macron’s decisions, to see if he will be able to carry out the promises that he made while campaigning.
In his acceptance speech, Macron thanked his followers and then delivered a serious message for France. Standing in front of a somewhat somber background, with the French flag and the European Union flag behind him, Macron used the speech as an opportunity to address the far-right voters in France, encouraging unity amongst all French people.
“I know the divisions of our country that have driven some to the extreme. I respect them. I know the anger, anxiety, and doubts that many have expressed,” Macron said. “France will be on the front line of the fight against terrorism on its soil and in international action.”
