In 2008, comedian and actress Wanda Sykes got married to a French woman, Alex Niedbalski, and they’re really freaking cute together all the time… but being married to a French person can occasionally make for some communication difficulties, even if you do know a bit of French like Sykes does.
In this hilarious interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Sykes talks about how she thinks her wife and kids occasionally speak French really quickly in order to conspire against her.
“I’m picking up little words, but I can tell when they’re about to pull something over on me because they speak fast and in a lower tone. So it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, you know le petit dejeuner, blah blah blah,’ and I’m like okay, I’m with you, breakfast. It’s Sunday so this must be brunch,” says Sykes, before doing a pretty spot on interpretation of people speaking French when they want to make sure you won’t understand them. “Next thing you know, I’m sitting in the middle of a lake on a canoe!”
