Everyone knows the French are very particular when it comes to their skincare routines, but there’s a lot more to French beauty than luxury creams and high-end cosmetics. There are also a number of tried-and-true folk recipes and basic items that Parisians swear by.

This video from Glamrs dives into a few, starting with micellar water, which was designed to use as an all-purpose cleanser and makeup remover because of the harsh, unsuitable tap water in France. There’s also a homemade recipe for how to remove nail polish stains, a rum hair mask, and a face mask made with–who would have thought?–cabbage. I guess mon petit choux isn’t a term of affection for no reason–the French love this nutritious leafy green vegetable.

Try some of these tricks out yourself to see if they really live up to the hype. And maybe save yourself a few hundred dollars at L’Oréal.
