The 2016 UEFA European Championship–also known as Euro 2016–is in full swing!
This is the biggest year in the European football (that’s soccer here in the U.S. of course!) championship, since it will feature 24 men’s football teams, instead of the usual 16. Not only is it the biggest championship to date, but it’s also being hosted by France, making it a monumental time for France. And although the French team has only played two games so far (against Romania and Albania), they won both.
Five countries are new to this year’s championship: Albania, Northern Ireland, Iceland, Slovakia and Wales are making their debut into the games, mixing up the competition for the other teams.
Along with the high-spirited games comes the craziness of sports fans all piling into France to watch their favorite teams. Recently, there have been some post-game riots and rallies that have caused French authorities to wonder if they should have prepared less for the possibility of terrorism, and more for the possibility of sports fans tearing things up while celebrating their wins (or mourning their losses).
Though France has only won the European Championship twice, maybe hosting the games on their home turf will be a good luck charm!
