Often wrongly presented as one of the fathers of Impressionism, Edouard Manet (1832-1883) was more a precursor of modern painting. Righting this wrong impression (pardon the pun), the Getty Center in Los Angeles decided to highlight lesser-known works made by the painter in the last years of his life.

Co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, the exhibition “Manet and Modern Beauty” will be on display from October 8, 2019 to January 12, 2020.

Portraits of Parisian women, still-lifes, pastels, café scenes: the works on display reveal the French artist’s fascination with fashion, flowers and femininity. Through 90 paintings, the Getty presents the painter’s unflinching and objective interpretation of the society in which he lived.

Events, such as guided tours, discussions and a costume workshop with historian Maxwell Barr, will occur during the exhibition.

Who is the mysterious woman behind Manet’s famous painting “Spring,” the centerpiece of our new exhibition “Manet and Modern Beauty”? . Our wall labels name her Jeanne, because this is what Manet titled her when he exhibited the artwork in 1882—but that’s not the whole story. In fact, the model was not named until years after the painting was created, when its owner wrote that Manet “wanted to design a costume for Jeanne, who subsequently took on the stage name Mlle Demarsy and who modeled for the exquisite canvas Spring.” . Inspired by this and other clues, our curators engaged in a fascinating research journey to identify Manet’s often-forgotten models and their role in his work. Learn more about the identity of “Spring” as well as a companion work, “Autumn,” from the link in our bio. Jeanne (Spring) [Detail], 1881, Édouard Manet. Oil on Canvas, 29 1/8 × 20 1/4 in. J.
