L’Impératrice Drops Music Video for Single “Hématome”

While music fans the world over wait for nouveau disco group L’Impératrice’s new album, Tako Tsubo (out March 26), the band has given us a little something to tide us over.

Their new single, “Hématome” (which translates to “Bruise”), has been released alongside an animated music video surprisingly reminiscent of those of Gorillaz… and starring a literal gorilla. A funky, upbeat groove contrasts bizarrely both with lyrics about obsessive, disappointed love, and a sometimes-gorey animated tale of a gorilla desperate to become a real human woman. It feels like something out of a fairytale, reminiscent of frog princes and swan princesses, or perhaps a very strange allegory for gender confirmation surgery.

However you feel about it, you’ll want to add it to your weekend playlist, along with the album’s four other singles: “Peur des filles,” “Voodoo?,” “Fou,” and “Anomalie Bleue.”
