From prints by Dürer to paintings by Bonnard via the exuberance of Toulouse-Lautrec, La Toilette: Naissance de l’Intime focuses on various portrayals of the act of bathing, exploring a moment within the lives of women that has often been a source of fascination.

Through the eyes of the artist, visitors gain a deeper understanding of how the intimacy of bathing evolved throughout the years. From what seems to be a basic routine, artists unveil the art of the bath and hygiene, with complex codes and a growing number of accessories. With over a hundred works to explore including paintings, prints, photos and even stained glass, visitors discover a moment captured by the artist where intimacy is partially unveiled and hinted at, and where nudity is an illustration of the changing times and habits.

Visitors will delight in seeing one theme depicted in various styles of art from the 13th to the 20th century, shedding new light on our relationship to acts that are such a familiar part of our lives.
