Though French president Emmanuel Macron and American president Donald Trump have had what some have called the diplomatic bromance of the century, their relationship got tested this weekend when what was supposed to be a somber moment of commemoration turned into a war of words. Or, more specifically, of hashtags.
TV personality Jimmy Kimmel decided to respond to this mutual frostiness by playing a little prank. Kimmel went out into the streets to ask people what they think of Trump’s offer to return the Statue of Liberty to France. The little lady was gifted to the U.S. back in 1886 as a gesture of peace, and built by the same man who built the Eiffel Tower, Gustave Eiffel. Its inscription famously reads, “Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
The craziest part about this whole stunt — side from people’s hilarious and somewhat terrifying responses to the hoax — is that it actually seems believable to many people, that Trump would return this American monument. But luckily, Trump is still only interested in deporting actual live people instead of giant green replicas.
