Though Jane Birkin might be most immediately recognized for lending her name to the Birkin bag, the actress and singer has many successes worth remembering. On Monday, January 29, Birkin will be telling her stories in a discussion at FIAF.

After nearly of decade with no new studio albums, Birkin has returned to the international spotlight with an album of songs French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg wrote for her during their relationship some three decades ago. The songs have been arranged to be accompanied by a symphony with Birkin providing the vocals. She will be performing the album in a one-night show, Birkin Gainsbourg the Symphonic, at Carnegie Hall.

As a young actress and singer, Birkin blossomed with Gainsbourg at her side as anyone can tell from their first hit, Je t’aime moi non plus. Their 13-year romance is fabled and mythical, one that flourished throughout the 70s simultaneously with the duo’s professional careers.

Before she takes the stage with Gainsbourg’s songs, she’ll engage in a discussion at FIAF about her iconic career in the entertainment, music, and fashion industries. A Q&A session will follow, as well as a book signing of Attachmentsa book of photographs portraying Birkin’s life with Gainsbourg and her three daughters, written in collaboration with photographer Gabrielle Crawford.

The talk will be given in English.
