Jacques Becker’s Classic Films will Screen at Film Forum this August

In the hottest, most tourist-ridden part of the New York summer, the best thing to do is to escape to the cool darkness of an independent movie theatre for a French film series.

The newly renovated Film Forum theatre is reopening with a celebratory Jacques Becker series of his best films, from August 1 through August 16. A versatile director with films ranging from melodrama and French Noir, to prison films, and his famous “youth trilogy” (Antoine and AntoinetteRendezvous in July, and Édouard and Caroline), Becker is a can’t-miss filmmaker for any Franco- or cinephile.

After being held in a German prisoner-of-war camp during the early years of World War II, Becker became a film director, joining the Comité de libération du cinéma français during the Nazi occupation. An assistant to Jean Renoir during his golden years in the 30s, Becker wasn’t lauded as a screenwriter and director really until after his death in 1960.

Tickets are $9 for Film Forum members and $15 for non-members. The films screening in the series are listed below,
