How to Avoid Getting Mugged in Paris (or Any Other Big City)

Mugging is what frequent travelers, or anyone who lives in a big city, know is an occupational hazard.

It could happen anytime, anywhere, in broad daylight or in the middle of the night. Luckily, travel vlogger dream duo Damon and Jo have some tips to avoid getting mugged, and a few anecdotes to illustrate their Houdini-like escape methods. Though their stories focus on notorious mugging cities like Paris and Amsterdam, they can apply just about anywhere. And the big rule is, essentially, that wherever you go, never look like you might be a tourist. Never reveal your nationality or that you speak English, and never wear anything in a telltale tourist fashion (backpack on your chest, fanny pack, lanyard). FYI, if you’re going to lug around your Canon with you, maybe don’t pair it with an orange visor.

Most of all, trust your “sketchometer.” If you feel like you might be in danger, always trust your intuition. Stay alert, stay prepared, and safe travels. And stay tuned for the surprise ending to this video.
