A new exhibit in the French town of Perpignan is honoring the unsung heroes of the 24-hour media cycle: photojournalists.
The Visa pour l’Image International Festival of Photojournalism is held every year in Perpignan to celebrate the incredible work of photographers like Veronique de Viguerie, whose photos of civilian life in Yemen are as poignant as they are horrific. The aim is to remind people that behind all art there are real world issues and consequences that need to be contended with.
“My job is just to come up with an exceptional picture… show the conflict through the beauty so people would be able to look at a sad picture and keep looking at it… without getting hurt from the picture itself,” says Khalil Hamra, whose photojournalism centers around daily life in Gaza. A loaded challenge, but one Hamra seems to accept with surprising success.
