New York’s most famous secret, invitation-only dinner party is back this year. And we know when it’s happening.

On Wednesday, July 17, thousands of people dressed in white will gather to share a meal in a location kept secret until the very last minute. The iconic Dîner en Blanc (“dinner in white”), created thirty years ago in France, returns to New York for its ninth consecutive year, several months earlier than its usual early fall date. It’s a real visual spectacle since all kinds of outfits are allowed — encouraged — provided you are dressed in white from head to toe in an elegant way.

Only a few lucky people are invited to the event: guests from previous years, friends of guests, and some of the people on the waiting list (which numbered at 64,000 for the 2018 edition). More than 5,500 New Yorkers will be selected to attend. Guests must dutifully bring their own tables, chairs and cutlery (all white, of course) as well as their picnic, and any table decorations they want. It’s also possible to order a pre-maid basket from the event’s caterer.

Dîner en Blanc has taken place on Governors Island, at Lincoln Center, and in Robert F. Wagner Park, to name just a few of the locations of the recent years.
