8 French Films at Sundance this Year

Since 1985, hundreds of films have been shown each year at the world-famous Sundance Film Festival. This year the festival will be spread out over four cities: Sundance Mountain Resort, Ogden, Salt Lake City and Park City from January 22nd until February 1st. Of the many pictures on offer are 8 films are that are French or were co-produced with France.

Feature films

Bande de filles or Girlhood by Céline Sciamma tells the story of Marieme, an ambitious teenager. She lives in public housing with her mother who cleans houses for a living but aspires to something greater. With three other young women, they begin to break out. More info and schedule here.

Eden takes us back to the 90s. Paul, a DJ, is trying to establish himself on the Paris nightlife scene. While professional success seems to be within reach, his love stories are more and more disastrous. More info and schedule here.

Summer of Sangaile is a film about adolescence. Sangaile dreams of becoming an aerial acrobat until she meets a girl who will help her to do just that. More info and schedule here.

Short films

Rabbit. In a prison in Washington State, a young woman is asked to test out a new program in which she will share her cell with a small, white rabbit. More info and schedule here.

La contre-allée, or Back-alley tells the story of Suzanne who has been a prostitute since she was 15 years old. She has her own network of regulars but new people begin to encroach on her territory. She tries to face down the threat. More info and schedule here.

Beach Flags is an animated film that also deals with rivalry. Vida, 18, is a lifeguard in Iran. She knows she’s the best in the water but a new girl, Sareh, arrives who threatens to steal her thunder. More info and schedule here.

Tempête sur anorak or Storm in a Jacket is 16 minutes of total immersion in Brittany. A storm is raging along the coast and two young scientists are swept up in this animated tale. More info and schedule here.

Bob and the Trees is the story 50-year-old butcher Bob’s everyday life, including golf and rap music. More info and schedule here.
