This week, French president Emmanuel Macron and Parisian mayor Anne Hidalgo went to visit the site of the 2015 mass shooting in Paris’s 11th arrondissement.
The massacre was prompted by satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo‘s publication of cartoons depicting of the prophet Muhammad, an important figure in the Muslim faith whom it is considered disrespectful to portray a likeness of. (You can find all Charlie Hebdo cartoons portraying Muhammad here, including one depicting the prophet as a homosexual.) Two Muslim brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, attacked the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo with assault rifles, killing 12.
Macron also visited the site of the shooting of a police officer just outside the Charlie Hebdo offices, and a kosher grocery store in the Marais district, the site of four more deaths by a third gunman in league with the Kouachi brothers.
